Few artists stand so completely at the intersection of art and science as Bern Porter. In science, Porter was a physicist on the Manhattan Project who became an outspoken pacifist after seeing the effects of the atom bomb on Hiroshima. In art, he was a prolific writer, artist, and publisher, best known for his found poems, described by art critic Peter Frank as being “to the poem as Duchamp was to the art object.” Porter’s art is influenced greatly by the guilt that came from his involvement with the Manhattan Project, his two seemingly separate identities connecting in his experiments on the page.
