Printed Matter's site allows you to search our inventory in three ways.

SIMPLE SEARCH

Using the pull-down menu in the upper right hand corner of every page on the Printed Matter site, you can perform a SIMPLE SEARCH of one of the following categories:

- Artist's Name
- Title of Publication
- Subject

You can also search all three of these categories simultaneously by selecting "Search All" from the pull-down menu. This will yield the most possible matches for your search term, but it will also be the least focused of the possible searches.

When searching under Artist’s Name, please enter the name as First Name Last Name, or Last Name only. For example "Edward Ruscha" or "Ruscha"

Do not search by Last name, First name - i.e. "Ruscha, Edward" as this will yield poor results.

Use of * is allowed for wildcard searches. For example "Rus*" will yield all artists with a last name starting with "Rus." Be sure to use quotes around your wildcard search.

When searching under Subject the search tool scans several fields of every record including the Synopsis field. This field contains a written description of the physical form and / or contents of the title and may also contain key words, phrases, and names of additional contributors.


ADVANCED SEARCH

Printed Matter''s ADVANCED SEARCH feature allows you to search far more selectively. On the ADVANCED SEARCH page you will find the following search fields that you can search independently one at a time or in combination with each for a more precise search.

Book Type [A pull down list of forty-four kinds of books Printed Matter carries]
Volume [volume, issue number, and date of a periodical]
Cover [A pull down list of standardized descriptions of book covers]
Binding [A pull down list of standardized descriptions of book bindings]
Features [A pull down list of common special features of books]
Process [A pull down list of printing processes]
Color [A standardized list of color use in printing]
Signed [Is the title signed and numbered?]

City of Publication
Country or State of Publication

Subject / Theme [A pull down list of 109 thematic categories into which titles have been sorted]
Synopsis [A descriptive paragraph treating a title’s form and content. Searching in this field is a hit or miss technique.]

RECENT ADDITIONS

Finally, you can also review the RECENT ADDITIONS to our inventory sorted alphabetically by artist, by price, or by date received. This tool is amazingly helpful if you are a frequent visitor to the site and wish to find out quickly about new arrivals since your last visit, or if you are simply curious about what’s new at Printed Matter.

Please note that Printed Matter''s inventory has been computerized since 1986, and many of the titles indexed will no longer be available. You may place yourself on a "Wishlist" for out-of-stock inventory. We will attempt to find these titles for you, however, keep in mind that it may be impossible for us to obtain everything. If the title becomes available, Printed Matter will contact you with its price, and you will then have a limited time to make the purchase. You are under no obligation to purchase any titles you have placed on the Wishlist!
