David Sandlin
Swamp Preacher
Book Launch
Thursday, December 14, 2006, 5-7PM
Printed Matter is extremely pleased to present a book launch for the newest artist''s book by David Sandlin, Swamp Preacher. Please join us on Thursday, December 14, 2006, from 5-7PM, to celebrate this recent publication with the artist, who will be present to sign books. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue at 22nd Street.
Swamp Preacher presents the sixth volume of Sandlin’s ongoing project A Sinner''s Progress, an epic series of lore surrounding characters involved with a religious novelty company, Pur-Ton-o-Fun Co. Moving back in time, Swamp Preacher uncovers the unearthly origins of Carl Bob deVille, Pur-Ton-o-Fun Co.’s charismatic and mysterious founder. Metamorphosed through the absorption of others’ sins, Carl Bob deVille must be reborn from swampy depths. The legend of Swamp Preacher draws on rich sources from the Southern gothic tradition to pulp fiction comics. Sandlin''s sublimely gut-wrenching combinations of enticing color, seductive lines and repulsive imagery are mesmerizing. Like a visual Virgil, Sandlin takes viewers into a hellish realm of metastasized misbehavior.
Published by Fantagraphics, Swamp Preacher is a 40-page, two-color paperback comic book and is available for $5.95 instore and online.
The fifth installment of A Sinner’s Progress, An Alphabetical Ballad of Carnality, will also be available for purchase and signing. The New York Times Book Review recently wrote, “while the spirit of Vermeer is noticeably absent in David Sandlin’s book An Alphabetical Ballad of Carnality, Hieronymus Bosch, William Blake, Gustave Doré and Walt Disney are present. Well, maybe Disney is a stretch, but this comically grotesque series of disturbingly funny tableaus about the upside of eternal damnation, filthy lucre and masochistic mendacity draws on the work of these greats in an orgy of brush and ink and color fantasy.”
An Alphabetical Ballad of Carnality is a 36-page, full-color, hard-cover book and is available for $14.95 in store and online. Other titles by David Sandlin, including the retrospective Wonderfoolworld, are also available through Printed Matter and can be purchased for signing.
