The Cremaster Cycle
Matthew Barney, Nancy Spector, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Neville Wakefield
New York, NY: Guggenheim Museum Publications. 2002
"The most important American artist of his generation."
—Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times Magazine
"Filled with hundreds of Matthew Barney’s fantastical images, this comprehensive volume, which accompanied a major exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, surveys the popular artist’s CREMASTER cycle—an epic five-part film project that uses the biological model of sexual difference as its conceptual departure point.
Three essays by Barney experts articulate the series’ diverse themes and explore the artist’s innovative aesthetic vocabulary; interviews with key collaborators—composer, costume designer, make-up artist, technicians, and actors—reveal his working process. In addition to stills from the five films—including the final episode, CREMASTER 3, which will premiere at the exhibition—the book features related sculptures, photographs, drawings, and storyboards. For anyone intrigued by this Wagner of contemporary art, this is an atlas to his enticingly hypnotic worlds." – Publisher

The Order : from Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3
[DVD]
Matthew Barney
New York, NY: Palm Pictures. 2003
Matthew Barney's legendary Cremaster Cycle was hailed by The New York Times as "An inspired benchmark of ambition, scope and forthright provocation for art in the new century." Nine years in the making, the five films that comprise the Cremaster Cycle came to a brilliant grand finale with a 31 minute sequence at the close of Cremaster 3 called The Order.
In The Order a death-defying race to the top of the Guggenheim Museum, Matthew Barney is a tartan-clad apprentice seeking Masonic redemption. Before taking on legendary sculptor Richard Serra, who tosses molten Vaseline down the Guggenheim's ramps, Barney must bypass a troupe of tap-dancing girl scouts, a pair of dueling hardcore bands, a ravishing model who transforms herself into a cheetah, and a cabor toss with a flayed ram in a dizzying mirror to the artist's fantastical Cremaster Cycle.
Features music from The Order, by Jonathan Bepler.
