Transcendental Black Metal : A Vision of Apocalyptic Humanism Hunter Hunt-Hendrix
Transcendental Black Metal : A Vision of Apocalyptic Humanism
Austin, TX: Handmade Birds. 2011

Synopsis: Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, is the frontman and idealist of the Brooklyn black metal band Liturgy. Hunt-Hendrix's manifesto, Transcendental Black Metal, was first delivered at a quasiacademic 2009 conference called “Hideous Gnosis” and later published in an anthology derived from same. Hunt-Hendrix argues for a hybridization of black metal, called "renihilation," which aims to transform the genre's typical nihilism into affirmation. He prescribes specific strategies for drummers, guitarists and vocalists of this style, attempting to create a more organic sound. Liturgy's brand of black metal aims, above all, to achieve Apollonian levels of noise.
