Nathan Gwynne
Drum Circle for One
Brooklyn, NY: N. Gwynne. 2009

Synopsis: "Drum Circle for One is an improvised percussion composition performed and recorded using layering and looping techniques. An initial pattern was played, additional layers were added one at a time, building a polyrhythmic effect approximating a live ensemble performance. Slow and steady, the beat is linked to the natural rhythmic repetition of breath and pulse. The synchronization is imperfect; the phase shifts are incidental. The piece plods along, rising at the end in a gradual crescendo-accelerando, which seems decisively anticlimactic. Generically tribal, familiar to the point of cliché, the piece plays as a beautifully hypnotic soundtrack for nothing. The flip side of the record is etched with the artist's horoscope. The natal chart was copied from an original drawn by the artist's father in 1981, calculated for July 7, 1979, 14:38 Pacific Daylight Time in Santa Rosa, California, 38° 26' N / 122° 43' W." --from the label
