Bill Hayden
Coconuts
New York, NY: 100%. 2009
Synopsis: Bill Hayden's Coconuts is a compilation of photographs taken by the artist while on vacation in the Caribbean. Presented as postcard-sized color images, one to a page, Hayden's photographs focus on the coconut palm tree, symbol of tropical paradise. In advertisements, the tree is usually depicted as a silhouette against a stunning sunset or as a shady hangout for bikini-clad ladies. Hayden strips the tree of such romance by portraying it over and over again in a matter-of-fact way. Here's one. Here's one. Here's one. Here's another one. The repetitive mundanity of the collection is thrown into high relief by the book's cover, the front of which features a vectorized image of a tropical drink shaded by palm fronds; the back of which displays a tanned and sand-speckled neck draped with a diamond-studded palm tree necklace.
