Mary Walling Blackburn
The Head / Is / Is Better / For Using / Than Losing
New York, NY: M. Blackburn. 2008

Synopsis: The phrase 'use your head or lose your head' was directly stenciled onto the wall in German at a fort housing German prisoners of War during World War II; This fort later became the art compound of Donald Judd, who added his signature to the stencil. Here, artist Mary Walling Blackburn reappropriates the text yet again, silkscreening an intentionally mistranslated version of the directive onto a white silk scarf.
