Peter Sutherland Game Zurich, Switzerland: Nieves. 2007
Synopsis: This book presents a look at the casual, yet wholeheartedly enthusiastic gathering of the downtowners who comprise the Chinatown Soccer Club, a self-described "semi-organized" crew that draws on artists, designers, skateboarders, photographers, and other professionals with flexible schedules. Inspired by the football fervor of the 2002 World Cup games, these "all around good people" come together a few mornings a week to face off in fleet-footed battle. An enthusiastic participant, Sutherland has been documenting this camaraderie conjoined by sweat and movement with his camera in both formal and informal moments. Backlit furtive glances through chain link fences spy on bodies in motion, sideline activities and the occasional nosebleed. Straightforward portraits describe the multifariousness of the players and their unofficial outfits. Orbiting around this sporty system, neighborhood inhabitants practice Tai Chi, birds flock, and men on benches chew the fat. The selected images impart a sense of an urban utopia, formed through sportsmanship that changes little in spirit as seasons give way from leafy trees to snow-covered ground.
