Andrea Robbins and Max Becher
Brooklyn Abroad
New York and Dusseldorf, NY and Germany: Sonnabend Kunstpalast Dusseldorf. 2005
Synopsis: Artists Andrea Robbins and Max Becher chronicle the Orthodox Jewish experience in two distinct chapters of this large format photography book. The first, entitled 770, tells the story of a Chabad center that was started in Brooklyn in 1940 and that became so beloved and influential that the same collegiate-gothic style architecture was used to build Chabad centers all over the world. The second, Postville, portrays the Hasidic community of Postville, Iowa as it adapts to a Midwestern American lifestyle while keeping its Brooklyn heritage intact.
