Danielle Aubert, Tan Lin
Painting / Noun
: D. Aubert

Synopsis: Tan Lin's text in this collaborative project with the designer Danielle Aubert is laid out in such a way that only a discontinuous reading is possible. The fragmenting strategies employed by both the designer and the writer ensure a kind of chance-based experience of the work's meaning, which is not to say that Lin's message is arbitrary. Grazing on the work's graphically rich surface, one comes across "...all works of reading shall be looked at rather than read..." "...a very beautiful landscape would turn its own pages." and "..all painting should aspire to the condition of encyclopedias, sequencing, and b/w diagrams," for example. It's up to each reader/viewer to navigate these linguistic shoals in his or her own improvised vessel.
