Parking Lot Hydra
Brooklyn, NY: Decathlon Books. 2009
Synopsis: Parking Lot Hydra documents a traditional Balkan winter masquerade in Bulgaria from the confines of a nearby parking lot where participants changed into their costumes and masks. The site was chosen by artist Estelle Hanania as a compelling transitional space in which myth transmogrifies into physical reality. The book features large-scale color spreads depicting horned and feathered masks idly resting on asphalt, smoking adolescents half-clad in yak fur, and fully costumed performers standing against a backdrop of rusty vans and urban decay. Also included is an interview between Hanania and Decathlon Books.
