Mariken Wessels
Elisabeth : I Want to Eat
Amsterdam, The Netherlands: M. Wessels. 2009

Synopsis: Dutch artist Mariken Wessels constructs an intriguing narrative from the found photographs, postcards, and letters of a young woman named Elisabeth, whose personal effects, dating from the 1960s and 70s, wound up in a shop in the Hendrik Jacobszstraat in Amsterdam. Wessels rescued them from obscurity and enlarged them into full-bleed images rich with the stained and grainy texture of old photographs that have been handled and stored for decades. These gorgeous compositions, along with postcards written by Elisabeth’s aunt and uncle, paint a picture of a vibrant and spirited young woman who may have been haunted by mental illness. With pink tissue inserts providing English translations to the Dutch texts.
