Alison Knowles
Bread and Water
Barrytown, NY: Left Hand Books. 1995
Synopsis: Knowles noticed that cracks in her homemade bread resembled rivers. Using atlases, she matched the pattern of each loaf to a real river. This book reproduces in halftone all 17 palladium prints made from photocopies of the bread. The images are combined with literary, geographical, and ecological text fragments. In his introduction, Henry Martin calls the book "a world of wonderful suspensions where everything makes sense and links in perfect harmony."
