The Man in Black / Drone Harness
Matthew Barney, Jonathan Bepler
New York, NY: Printed Matter, Inc.. 2000

This provocative multiple by Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler is a fund-raising edition for Printed Matter. The 1970's-style twelve-inch vinyl picture-disc in a gatefold album cover features images from Barney's Cremaster 2. The record has two tracks, both audio remixes by Bepler from the soundtrack he composed for the movie. Side A is "The Man in Black" featuring Dave Lombardo (the drummer from the heavy metal band Slayer) and 200,000 honey bees. Side B is a dark and moody track entitled "Drone Harness." The edition is an amazing amalgam of sonic and visual vitality: a major contribution to Barney's ever-growing oeuvre. Each record is signed and numbered by both artists.

A Joyful Confusion
Victor Boullet
London, England: Lauren Monchar. 2003

A Joyful Confusion presents eight unrelated series of photographs from Norwegian photographer Victor Boullet gathered together around an essay, "In Absurdum" by Robert Meyer. The essay touches on the sensibility underlying Boullet's imagery, which covers everything from policemen on their knees in "Shadow Seeker" to horses on their backs in "Oblivon." Intriguing on their own, it is the sequencing of these series that packs the real punch, the absurdity that creates the logic.

Punk Picasso
Larry Clark
New York, NY: AKA Editions. 2003

The title of Larry Clark’s opus punk Picasso is lifted from a passage in David Denby's review of the artist's Bully that reads “…as the camera wanders-grazes among naked thighs and tattooed torsos, this punk Picasso combines the multiple desires of lover, artist and voyeur…” The book displays, in scrapbook format, a loose chronological overview of the celebrated artist’s provocative career.

The material presented spans family snapshots (his American Indian great grandfather, his father playing golf, a portrait of his mother as a professional photographer with Rollei and flash in hand, Clark with his son’s soccer team); unpublished images from Tulsa and 42nd St.; photographs from the set of his first film Kids and his new film Ken Park; clippings from reviews of exhibitions and films; correspondence; transcribed stories; Roger Maris ephemera; portraits of skateboarders, River Phoenix (images appropriated from Teen Magazines), Clark’s lover Tiffany and their dog Snappy; Page Six headlines and reproductions of vinyl records that act as a silent soundtrack to the raucous visual narrative.

punk Picasso gathers together scraps that chart the life of the artist and his creations, which in Clark’s case, are inseparably entwined.

The Baader-Meinhof Affair
Erin Cosgrove
New York, NY: Printed Matter, Inc.. 2003

In the first publication from Printed Matter's Publishing Program for Emerging Artists, Erin Cosgrove takes the romance novel for a ride through revolutionary terrain to produce a tempestuous tale of terrorism and true love. In the cloistered environment of an exclusive East Coast college, the young and the restless fall in love while romancing the ghosts of the Baader-Meinhof gang active in 1970s Germany. It’s a hilarious send up of the romance genre complete with earnest interjections from the author who supplies historical cliff notes and commentary for the confused. A page-turning tour de force of the dangerous passions and politics of the privileged.

From Muff To You
Sophie Spar
New York, NY: Muff Crew Productions. 2003

From Muff to Youis an excellent gift book that comes with a red lollipop to suck while you rifle through the collection of paper gems brought to you by department store buyer, Sophie Spar, and the Muffs-in-charge-of-fashion gang, Muff Crew Productions (Stella Fay Metzner and Ruby Sky Stiler). The integration of fashion, performance art, set design, variety show, and slumber party is so, shall-we-say, "seamless"in the work of this eight-year-old crew that you might hear Ruby and Stella’s voices laud (in unison of course): "So what?" Don’t forget to check out the website, www.muffcrewproductions.com for more information about this funny collective.
